How are they formed? Forms by the crack-seal mechanism in which quartz contains cracks of Crocidolite (a blue form of asbestos) and water containing minerals to make both seep into the cracks. Quartz and Crocidolite begin to form on the cracks’ surface which in turn grows the rock and causes more cracks for new layers to form. This causes a banding and iridescent effect. Tigereye gets its color from oxidized iron in the Crocidolite and limonite.
