Sea Urchins

(SEE ER-chins)

Echinoids first appeared about 450 million years ago in the late Ordovician period, which was 220 million years before dinosaurs appeared on Earth. Sea Urchins are spiny marine invertebrates that are closely related to sand dollars and starfish. Their name, Echiniod, comes from the Greek work “Eckinos” meaning “hedgehog”. There are about 1000 Sea Urchin species known to man.

The spines on fossilized Sea Urchins often fossilize separately from the body as they are held on by soft tissue which breaks down during the long fossilization process and causes them to detach.
