Petrified Wood

(PE-truh-fied WOOD)

is a fossil that starts to form when a tree gets covered quickly with mud, volcanic ash, and other materials, preserving the wood before it rots. Mineral-rich water

then flows through the sediment, eventually (over millions of years) replacing the original plant structure with minerals, turning the original wood to stone. The resulting fossil exhibits all of the preserved details (wood grain and bark) of the original tree. Petrified wood is found throughout the world including the USA, Madagascar, and Indonesia.
