Ammonite
(Am-O-nite)
Ammonoids were a type of prehistoric mollusk that are now extinct and were a close relative to squids and octopuses. Their shells were made from a mineral called aragonite, which is the same shiny mineral that pearls are made from.
Ammonoids first appeared on Earth 425 million years ago and became extinct 66 million years ago. Ammonoids were fossilized into Ammonites by settling into the sediment of the seabed. The sediment turned to rock which allowed the the Ammonoid shells to dissolve over time and leave a void between the shell chambers. The empty shell chambers would allow for minerals to seep in and fill the chambers. Once hardened, the minerals left us with the beautiful Ammonite that we have today.
