How it's formed: Forms in limestone sediment and is uniquely comprised of rock, mineral and organic matter such as fossilized organisms. Septarian forms under water and contains calcite which forms in calcium-rich marine environments from the shells of dead marine organisms. Septarian gets its color from trace amounts of iron in the water it forms in.
