Orthocereas
(OR-thoh-sair-uhs)
were a type of squid-like marine mollusk that lived over 480 million years ago, during the Ordovician Period. Also known as "straight horns", they were long and slender and ranged from a few inches to over six feet in length. They moved by crawling on the ocean floor, filling their
shells with air and floating, and by expelling water to propel themselves in the opposite direction. Orthoceras went extinct around 360 million years ago, during the Devonian Period.
