Have a fun, educational activity and open up an owl pellet! This is a hands-on display of how predator and prey interact in nature!
How are Owl Pellets formed? Owls swallow their prey whole. Whether it's a mouse, vole or bird, owls are unable to digest fur, feathers, teeth and bones. The prey will pass from the owl's esophagus to their gizzard, where tissues, organs and fluids are broken down and digested. The undigestible parts are then compacted into a tight, oval shaped mass. After a few house of compaction, the owl regurgitates the pellet and spits it out onto the ground, under where it's perched. Us humans then collect the dried owl pellets for fun and educational purposes.
