Ice Box Cave
Deep in the woods, among the giant rocks, ledges and waterfalls, sits a cave with steel bars guarding the entrance. Several years ago, this cave was open to visitors to experience the bone-chilling air that flowed through the cavern. Today, Ice Box Cave is unfortunately closed to the public due to an initiative by the park service to save the bats. Ice Box Cave is home to hundreds of thousands of bats which are dwindling in numbers according to bat conservationists.
A few years ago, my husband took me to see Ice Box Cave and we were extremely disappointed that you could not even walk up to the steel bars that now block the entrance. Though we could not walk into the cave, it is still nice to walk around it and view it from afar with the beautiful landscape of the ledges that surround it.
Ice Box Cave can be found in the Cuyahoga National Park on the Ledges Trailhead in Peninsula, Ohio.
